Recordings and concerts with Tomasz Stanko, Anthony Braxton, Randy Brecker, Bob Mintzer, and other jazz greats; storms of applause after their performances in Europe, the USA, Africa, Japan, Australia and Indonesia; master classes given in Singapore, Malaysia and Ireland. All these are just snippets of the achievements of the Finnish group Sun Trio. If this looks pretty impressive, it is worth considering that everyone in the group is under 30. In 2006, Sun Trio won the Young Nordic Jazz competition in Iceland. The group’s trumpeter, Kalevi Louhivuori, was, at the same competition, recognised as the best soloist, one who explores the further reaches of his instrument's colour range. This is not a bad compliment for a group that takes inspiration from, among others, the legendary trumpeter Miles Davis; yet such praises have become the norm. Inspired by jazz traditions and Nordic lyrics, Sun Trio soon gained fans, including experienced professionals. The group has recorded with the internationally acclaimed record label Cam Jazz that records such prominent musicians as Kenny Wheeler and Chick Corea. Having released their first album at the beginning of this year, the group will perform in Vilnius for the first time. “The music of the Sun Trio is a dimension in itself, like the path of a falling star, or, actually, the music of a great sun,” critics have said. We will soon be able to verify these colourful epithets.
